Grocery shopping has gotten better and worse in recent times. There are more choices, and there are more ways to shop. Yet, it can sometimes be hard to stick to a food budget, as prices may go up while your needs remain the same. There are a few things to do to help your budget match what you need from the store.
Eat before you shop. First of all, never go to the grocery store hungry. People simply typically make more impulse buys—and get more food they may not ultimately want or need—when they go to the grocery store hungry.
Don’t be afraid to coupon clip. Coupon clipping doesn’t just mean the local paper any more, either. There are lots of coupons that can be printed online, check out our printable grocery coupons. Don’t be shy about printing them out and using as many of them as you need. Although it may make others wait a few minutes, you deserve to take care of yourself and your money.
Look for alternative choices on your favorite products. The off-brand and store brand alternatives of products are typically of equal value to the name brand options. However, you can save a significant amount of money if you go with the off-brand. Also, don’t be afraid to look up and down on the shelves themselves. Stores often know that shoppers will simply pick up what’s placed at eye level. For better deals, keep your eyes open and aware.
Make a complete shopping list before you go to the store. Consider what you need and want from the store carefully. Once you are in the store, make it a hard rule that you don’t buy anything outside the list. Many poor choices are made from impulse buys. The store sets you up for them even, think of that delicious pack of cookies strategically placed just before the check-out aisle. Don’t fall for it. Know what you want, and go get it.
Compare the cost of groceries bought in person and online. There are many food delivery services available in most cities. From Peapod to Yummy.com to your local store, there are various options across the country. However, most people don’t save money when buying groceries online. Beyond the delivery charge and the tip to the delivery person, the prices are often higher when the store knows it doesn’t have as much competition. If possible, go to the store in person.
