When I read the Twilight novels by Stephenie Meyer, I was sufficiently underwhelmed. I found the plot line engaging and fun, but wasn’t impressed by Meyer’s writing style. And don’t even get me started on the movies… Ugh. Now, before Team Edward arranges for my public lynching, hear me out: I may have been wrong about Meyer’s writing. It is entirely possible that reading The Host has changed my mind.
This novel, a sci-fi/romance hybrid that defies the laws of modern genre, is Meyer’s first foray into adult fiction. After reading it, I can honestly say that it’s better than … Read More »
Sophie Kinsella, bestselling author of the Shopaholic series, is well-known for her quirky characters and fun-to-read women’s fiction. In her latest novel, Twenties Girl, she unites the seemingly opposing genres of chick lit and ghost stories. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that she also adds her witty narrative and quick-paced storytelling.
In Twenties Girl, Lara is struggling to hold the pieces of her life together. Her boyfriend has just dumped her, her business partner has just run away on a tropical getaway without notice, and her family just doesn’t seem to understand her. While attending a funeral for a great-aunt … Read More »
Gregory’s “The White Queen” Enchants
As the debut novel in her new series Cousins’ War, Philippa Gregory’s New York Times Bestseller The White Queen is an engaging read. Back-tracking the line of the English throne, Gregory explores the intricacies of a royal line predating the Tudors, one largely glossed over by romantic historians for being too violent: the War of the Roses. During a time of frequent political upheaval, with power shifting regularly between the two houses of York and Lancaster, Gregory’s characters are tossed about in a stormy sea of betrayal, intrigue, mysteries, and courtly love.
Quinn Cummings released her book this past summer; it’s called “Notes from the Underwire: Adventures from My Awkward and Lovely Life”. It’s published by Hyperion Books. I highly recommend it. She’s an author who can take you through a trail of emotions, laughing until you realize the tears also coming from your eyes at the rich humanity and heart beneath the true humor of her words. Look for Amazon coupon codes and Barnes & Noble coupons before picking it up.
