Franklin Covey Planner: Product Review

After comparing a lot of different planners that would be easy to take me with me when I was on the go around New York City, I purchased the red sierra leather-like (imitation leather), zipped organizer starter set by Franklin Covey. It’s 5-1/2 by 8-1/2. It looks professional, like a miniature briefcase.

There are pockets on each side. One has a button closure, but the other one is an open pocket. I mistakenly thought the latter was open as an invitation to store stuff within it. However, placing a notebook in it screwed up the workings of the planner. The handle no longer goes down correctly on that side. I have to jiggle and work the handle down into its proper slot in order to fold up the handles of the purse to allow me to easily open the planner.

The zipper closure and sleek design of the Franklin Covey planner allow easy access to it. Whether commuting on a train or making a quick change at work, it’s easy to keep a lot of paperwork and planning all together. I found it was quick and easy for it to transform from a briefcase and semi-purse to the planning book it was designed to be.

The planner pages contained within were rather bland. They were effective and organized, yes, but not as much fun as I wanted them to be. I like a more personal feel to my day-to-day planning, and I quickly replaced it with Flavia planner materials. Although the pastels Flavia uses don’t precisely match the dark red exterior, it was a perfect fit. Franklin Covey planners state on the exterior the sizes of refills that will fit within it. Aside from the handle mishap, it seems sturdy enough to last through a few years of planner refills.

I really like the planner overall, but I think it’s more suitable for men than women. If you want to carry it as your purse, you’re going to be woefully disappointed. What appears to be a lot of storage space at first glance will barely hold a compact, a comb and spare change. There is, however, a pen holder, interior zipper compartment and slots to hold credit and identity cards.

Depending on the sale price you may get, the planner ranges in price from around $59 to right at $100. It is definitely worth the money. The Franklin Covey emblem is small, discreet and only on the top side of the planner. For those that like to get a little creative with the planner that they carry around, although the imitation leather exterior is durable, it’s ultimately pliable. If you want to stick pins in the briefcase (such as animal rights or human rights messages, as I do to some of my bags), it’s very feasible. Stickers would also stick to it as well, if you aren’t quite sure you want to keep the fun, self-made décor on your bag forever.
