Top Five Must-Haves for Your College Dorm Room

If you’re packing for college for the first time ever, it’s a little intimidating to decide what to bring and what to leave at home. Of course you’re bringing your laptop and your school supplies (don’t forget a sturdy backpack!), but what about your day-to-day living essentials? Take it from the advice of a once college freshman, there are a few things you’re going to want to have with you. Here’s your top five checklist and where you can shop for them all.

#1 – Bedding Essentials

Well, most of them are anyway. Don’t head off to school without a comfy pillow from home and a good quality egg-crate mattress topper. Try the Isotonic Zoned Comfort Memory Foam Mattress Topper ($39.99 for twin size) at Bed, Bath & Beyond and you’ll be snoring away in no time!

#2 – Plenty of Clothes Hangers

You will most likely have a few drawers and some closet space, but not much more. To get the most out of that closet, you’re going to want to have enough clothes hangers on hand. Bring some from home if you want or pick up a new pack of Room Essentials 18-pack multipurpose plastic hangers for $2 (on sale from $2.99) at Target.

#3 – Electrical Support

Your laptop, printer, phone, tablet, alarm clock, etc. are not going to fit into one outlet. Bring surge protectors, extra chargers, and any other electrical help you might need to stay well charged. Home Depot has great deals on a wide range of products, like the Belkin 6-Outlet Power Strip for only $4.24!

#4 – A Personal Medicine Cabinet

Well, you don’t need the cabinet itself, but you do need the contents of a tiny medicine cabinet just for you. Bring allergy meds, any prescriptions, bandages, tissues, pain reliever, and other essentials you use often, like cough drops or saline nasal spray. Shop for what you need and save at a Target store or online. While you browse, you might even think of some essentials that you hadn’t thought of yet!

#5 – Your Very Own Keurig

The Keurig K45 Elite Brewer Coffee Maker is just $119 and rated 5 stars at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Plus, it comes in COLORS! Invest in one for yourself or team up with your coffee-drinking roommate to split the cost if necessary.

If you’re not a coffee drinker, you can still get the Keurig to brew tea, cider, and hot cocoa from K-cups. Or, you can just shop for an electric kettle to brew your tea the old-fashioned way – and yes, Bed Bath and Beyond has those too!
